Open contours

Open contours

Bevel cutting can also be applied for open contours. Here is an example part that has a bevel along a chord-line of the circle:

Preparing the geometry

Draw the chord line representing the projection of the bevel on the top surface of the part as a separate open line in the geometry and then tool up the part:

It may be useful to set up open polylines to be cut rather than marked in the Part settings, as shown below. Otherwise, the open contour is likely to get marked rather than cut[1].

Adding chamfer tooling

Click on the open contour to bring up the Laser Cut panel:

  • Use the Chamfer setting to add the chamfer cut as shown. The dotted line is the projection of the cut on the bottom surface of the part.

  • If the chamfer is in the wrong direction, click on Reverse to change the direction of the cut. This will also flip the chamfer direction.

  • Zoom in and inspect if the beam offset is in the correct direction relative to the geometry drawn for the cut. If not, select the Flip beam offset checkbox to flip the beam to the opposite side of the laser cut.


1. If that has happened, you can change the Pierce to Normal and the Condition to Large, Medium or Small to make it a cut.
